JUNE 2023

You Are Berry Special!

Celebrating the very best English strawberries

June 2023

Hello,

Summer has finally arrived and it’s berry-tastic!

June is one of the most rewarding months for British produce and there is nothing better than cooking with local produce to make your menus sing. From beans to berries, there are over 35 fruit and veg varieties at their berry-best this month.

And when it comes to British strawberries, it doesn’t get any sweeter than strawberries from Fiveways Farm in Kent – delicious eaten on their own, with a dusting of sugar or with lashing of cream or dipped in chocolate. Delish!

Let’s hope for some long-needed sunshine. If you believe the weather reports, it’s set to be a great month.

Best,
The County Supplies Team

The Market Chef

Our Market Chef series is a celebration of how to cook with the best seasonal produce.

This month, one of our favourite chefs, Ryan Stafford is cooking English asparagus with a salsa romesco and lemon aioli, and serving Jerusalem artichokes with English wagyu – tasty!

English Asparagus, Salsa Romesco & Leafy Lemon Aioli (v)
We’re taking full advantage of the current asparagus season.

Using the best of British asparagus from Portwood Asparagus, we’re serving up a Mediterranean twist on the traditional asparagus and hollandaise sauce.

Textures of Jerusalem Artichokes with English Wagyu Beef
We’re marrying English Wagyu with its perfect plant-based partner, the Jerusalem artichoke.

A tuber originally from North America, the Jerusalem artichoke’s sweet nutty flavour is the perfect complement to Wagyu beef.

Top Insights

After a tough winter and spring, we’re almost back to normal supply. The only produce currently affected are English potatoes and carrots.

English potato prices will keep rising until we get the new season crop. Old season crop is in short supply, and it looks like the new season crop will be delayed.

English carrots are in short supply thanks to a cold snap at the start of the year and a poor spring delaying the new crop. We’re currently sourcing from abroad although prices will remain high.
