JUNE 2024

All we ‘avo’ wanted!

Soft fruits and seasonal salads.

JUNE 2024

Hello!

Hooray for June! Marking the start of the summer, June is the month we swap brassicas for the more colourful, delicate produce the new season has to offer.

Juicy and full of flavour, British soft fruits are at their best. Strawberries will be joined by raspberries, blackberries and blueberries along with summer stone fruits including apricots, nectarines, peaches, cherries and plums.

With this abundance of fresh summer fruit, we also welcome bright crisp radishes, fresh salad leaves and seasonal vegetables such as artichokes, broad beans and peas, and the last of this year’s British asparagus too.

With so much delicious fresh produce on offer – coupled with longer days, warmer temperatures, Father’s Day, Royal Ascot and not forgetting the start of Euro 2024! – there’s plenty to look forward to this month.

Happy June!

Best,
The County Supplies Team

This month, we welcome the arrival of baby leaf salad from Cherry Tree Farm and mark the start of this year’s British berry season with the sweetest strawberries from Fiveways Farm in Colchester.

Let’s get cooking!

Top Insights

We would like to apologise for the supply disruption on certain product lines during May. Unfortunately, this is set to continue into June. In particular, locally grown cauliflowers have proved problematic, with supplies having to be sourced from France and Germany. Hopefully, there will be more UK varieties available over the coming weeks, with the warmer weather now (finally) hitting our shores.

Leeks have also been an issue. The English season has now finished and there are only French and Spanish varieties now available. However, we’d recommend waiting until the Belgium supply arrives at the beginning of July.

This month, broccoli switches from Spanish to UK and, the good news is, we have had a great run this year! Tenderstem broccoli is also now becoming more available with Kenyan and Spanish varieties available. However, amounts are less than expected so please contact your County Supplies sales representative if you require large volumes (UK supply is expected to become available by mid June).

Meanwhile, all potato varieties will continue to hold a strong price until the new crop arrives which, now, is a month later than expected due to late planting and the wet weather earlier in the season.

Government announcement
Last month’s announcement by the Government on their commitment to increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables grown domestically and classifying fresh produce as a key growth sector, and one which is critical to delivering food security, saw a series of initial steps confirmed – from increased funding to new regulatory reviews. Although a step in the right direction, this is one to watch now that the General Election has come sooner than most of us expected.
